Thembisa residents vow not to back down until demands are met – SABC News
Disgruntled Thembisa residents say they will stop at nothing until their demands are met.
Residents took to the streets from the early hours of this morning and barricaded roads with rocks and burning tyres over electricity tariff increases.
Several streets, including some sections of the busy Andrew Mapheto Drive, have been blockaded.
In April, Eskom increased its electricity tariffs by close to 13% and municipal customers saw an 11.32% increase that took effect on July 1.
Concerned resident Tsietsi Gumede lamented the high prices of electricity.
“What is killing here is that you can buy electricity for R1000. Then you get R750. Where is that R250 going to? That’s the problem. That’s the reason the situation is tense like this. And most of these township houses are owned by pensioners and these grannies can’t even fight for themselves; hence, you see us out in numbers.”
