New Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann says there are a few non-negotiables when it comes to player selection and building the right culture at Loftus.

Facing the media in Pretoria on Wednesday for the first time since replacing Jake White, Ackermann said it was too early to make bold declarations, having only officially taken over the job the day before. But he made one thing clear: reputation alone won’t guarantee a spot in the team.

“To play for the Bulls, you have to earn the jersey,” said Ackermann. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve played 100 Tests or are fresh out of the U20s. If you meet the standards we expect as coaches, you’ll play.”

While he acknowledged the quality of the current squad, he said it was vital to get to know the individuals.

“I do believe it’s a good squad, and the new players have strong CVs. But the big thing is how they align with the plan.”

Ackermann also emphasised his approach to culture and values, which he sees as crucial to the Bulls’ future success.

“I want a team that works hard and puts the team first. It’s about serving others – picking something up off the floor, handing someone else water first, treating people well. That builds respect and trust, which are everything.”

Ackermann, who will have the same scope of responsibility as his predecessor despite holding the title of head coach (not director of rugby), said his focus would always be on the field.

“Even ‘head coach’ is not always right for me, because I want to be on the field. That is important to me.”

On the squad’s mental state after a turbulent final season under White, Ackermann said: “The reality is, if you haven’t worked with a player or a team, it’s difficult to come to any conclusions. For me, the first thing is to get to know each player and what their strengths are.”

As for the assistant coaches, Ackermann said he was still in the process of assessing everything.

“I’ll make those decisions in time, but it will all come down to who fits into the system – not just with the players, but also among the staff.”
