Federal and local law enforcement officials in New York City have announced charges against a man, alleging to have manufactured and sought to use several explosive devices in the city.

The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, the New York City Police Commissioner and the FBI have confirmed the arrest of 55-year-old Michael Gann.

They allege in a statement that he used chemicals bought on the internet to make the bombs.

Clayton said the safety of New Yorkers was paramount and pointed to their allegation that Michael Gann built explosive devices, stored them on a rooftop in Soho and threw at least one onto the subway tracks while putting countless lives at risk.

He said that thanks to swift work by law enforcement partners, no one was harmed.

The FBI’s Christopher Raia said Gann allegedly produced multiple IEDs intended for use in Manhattan, while NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the individual threw one IED onto subway tracks and stored the others on the rooftop of a residential building.

He faces charges in relation to the possession and handling of destructive devices that could collectively carry sentences of up to 40 years.
