United States Congressman Ronny Jackson says his legislation to review the bilateral relationship between America and South Africa has passed through a committee in the House of Representatives.

Jackson, who is Republican, introduced the bill in April.

It is an effort to provide President Donald Trump with the tools necessary to impose sanctions on what Jackson says are “corrupt” South African government officials who chose to support American adversaries like China, Russia and Iran.

South Africa does not yet have a permanent envoy to the US after the expulsion of Ebrahim Rasool earlier this year.

Congressman Jackson posted on social media platform X that South Africa had made its choice when it abandoned America and its allies and “sided with communists and terrorists”.

Citing the passage of his bill through the House Committee, Jackson said it would allow for the full review of America’s relationship with South Africa and give Trump the tools necessary to hold what he referred to as a “corrupt government” accountable.

The Texas congressman also said that the days of allowing their so-called allies to walk all over the US were over.

A full House vote is at least months away with Congress in recess until September and if later passed, it would then head to the Senate for further deliberation.
