Cape Town gun violence tops 20 deaths after double murder in Khayelitsha

Cape Town’s ongoing wave of gun violence claimed two more lives on Tuesday afternoon when two men were shot dead and a third wounded in broad daylight in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha, bringing the number of fatal shootings in recent weeks in the metro to over 20.

Harare police have confirmed that two counts of murder and one of attempted murder have been registered following the brazen attack, which took place at approximately 1.30pm on Mkhombe Street.

“Police members attended to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies,” said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Western Cape police spokesperson.

A 25-year-old and a 34-year-old man were declared dead at the scene by emergency services. A third victim, aged 35, survived the shooting and was transported to a medical facility for treatment.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

“The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation and arrests are yet to be made,” Twigg confirmed.

This latest deadly incident comes amid a disturbing escalation in gun-related killings across Cape Town townships.

Over 20 people have been murdered in the Cape Flats and surrounding communities since late June.

Authorities have urged community members to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects.

“Anyone with any information about this shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” said Twigg.
