Tensions rise: Uber and Bolt react to planned e-hailing driver strike
E-hailing platforms Uber and Bolt South Africa have responded to growing tensions within the sector, following reports of a planned nationwide strike by drivers affiliated with the National E-Hailing Federation of South Africa (NEFSA).
Both companies acknowledged awareness of the proposed industrial action and stressed their continued commitment to engaging with drivers over long-standing concerns regarding earnings, safety, and working conditions.
An Uber spokesperson said the company had taken note of concerns raised.
“We are aware of the article that was published and acknowledge the concerns that have been raised,” Uber said. “Drivers remain at the heart of everything we do.”
The spokesperson added that the company continues to work with drivers to improve their experience on the platform.
“We are committed to engaging more with drivers as we are constantly working to improve the driver experience – whether it’s through fare reviews, introducing new safety features, or investing in product improvements.”
Bolt South Africa also reaffirmed its support for constructive engagement.
“Bolt South Africa acknowledges the concerns raised by members of the e-hailing driver community and is aware of the upcoming nationwide protest action announced by the NEFSA,” said Lerato Motsoeneng, Bolt’s senior general manager.
Motsoeneng told IOL that the company calls for peaceful conduct. “We urge all parties involved to engage peacefully and responsibly during this period. Bolt remains open to meaningful discussions that lead to practical and balanced solutions in the best interest of both drivers and riders.”
*Sibusiso Msomi, an e-hailing driver from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, told IOL that he would join the shutdown but said he doubts that it will occur.
“We are strapped for cash as it is due to high commissions and extortion from taxi associations, a shutdown would affect us very badly financially, but I understand the need, and I would join in.
Both companies said they are monitoring the situation and will implement measures to minimise disruptions while prioritising the safety of all users.
