South Africa wakes to a cold to cool Wednesday, with clear skies in the central interior but cloud cover and showers increasing across the southern and western regions. Damaging winds are also a concern in some parts of the country.

National outlook

Fine and cold to cool in the central and northern interior.

Cloudy with isolated to scattered showers and rain expected in the southwest, including parts of the Western Cape, southern Northern Cape and Eastern Cape interior.

Damaging winds likely along parts of the southern and southeastern coast.

Temperatures remain below seasonal average in most inland areas.

  • Pretoria: 20°C | 3°C
  • Johannesburg: 19°C | 2°C
  • No precipitation. Light winds.

KwaZulu-Natal

  • Mild and mostly sunny with a warm afternoon.
  • Durban: 23°C | 11°C
  • Good visibility and pleasant beach conditions.

Eastern Cape

  • Hot in places despite cloud and potential rain.
  • East London: 30°C | 16°C
  • Gqeberha: 28°C | 11°C
  • Strong winds and possible coastal rain expected.

Western Cape

  • Overcast with scattered showers, especially in the afternoon.
  • Cape Town: 16°C | 13°C
  • Cloudy skies, gusty northwesterlies, and light rain likely.
  • Cooler than recent days.

Free State

  • Cold morning, fine and sunny afternoon.
  • Bloemfontein: 18°C | 1°C
  • No rain. Calm conditions.

Limpopo

  • Chilly morning, sunny and dry throughout.
  • Polokwane: 19°C | 3°C
  • No precipitation.

Mpumalanga 

  • Clear skies and cool temperatures, warming later in the day.
  • Temperatures range from 2–5°C in the morning to highs around 17–19°C.

Northern Cape 

  • Warm and dry in the north; cloudier in the south.
  • Upington: 25°C | 13°C
  • Southern regions may experience light rain and stronger winds.

North West

  • Clear and cool with no expected rainfall.
  • Daytime highs around 18–20°C, early morning frost in places.

 

Weather to look out for 

  • Damaging winds likely along the Eastern Cape and southern KZN coastlines.

  • Rain spreading from the southwest to interior parts of the Western and Eastern Cape.

  •  Warmest city: East London at 30°C.

  • Coldest minimum: Bloemfontein at 1°C.
