Aussie backs blitz Lions in consolation win

The Wallabies denied the British & Irish Lions a 3-0 series clean-sweep with a morale-boosting win in the third and final Test in Sydney.

After a lengthy stop in play early in the second half due to lightning close to the stadium, the Wallabies shut out the Lions with two second-half tries to secure a 22-12 win and make sure the series ends 2-1 to the tourists.

QUADE: Wallabies should copy Boks

Winger Dylan Pietsch opened the scoring for the Wallabies after seven minutes in driving rain at the Accor Stadium to signal the Australians’ intent. A penalty by flyhalf Tom Lynagh in the 33rd minute stretched the hosts’ lead to 8-0, and that’s how it stayed going into the break.

The Lions seemed shaken by the loss of captain Maro Itoje and winger Tommy Freeman, who both failed Head Injury Assessments, and looked disjointed when the teams took the field after the long weather delay. To further compound the misery for the Lions, lock James Ryan was stretchered off the field shortly after halftime after taking a knee to the head.

Winger Max Jorgensen got the Wallabies’ second try in the 54th minute after capitalising on a Lions mistake.

Four minutes later, scrumhalf Tate McDermott seemingly took the Test beyond Andy Farrell’s team when he crashed over for the Wallabies’ third. But a try by replacement Jac Morgan finally got the Lions on the scoreboard in the final quarter, with replacement tighthead Will Stuart muscling over after the final hooter to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

Up next for the Wallabies is the Rugby Championship, with back-to-back away Tests against the Springboks in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
