Tragic Bergville crash claims the lives of five, including a child
Five people, including a five-year-old child, tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident along Rookdale Road in Bergville on the morning of Sunday, August 3.
According to reports, the crash, which occurred in the Okhahlamba Local Municipality, left one of the vehicles engulfed in flames, with one victim burned beyond recognition.
Search and rescue teams, along with firefighters, were dispatched to the scene.
The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has extended condolences and pledged government support to the bereaved families.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” Duma said.
“I have sent a team from my office and the department to ensure that they locate the families of the victims of this horrific accident.”
He added that the department will work closely with affected families in the coming days.
“Importantly, our focus is to ease the burden on their shoulders. We work with them to co-ordinate the funeral,” Duma said.
Acknowledging the pain and uncertainty many families face during such times, Duma emphasised a compassionate and tailored approach.
“We know that each family has a special need, and we will work with them throughout the week.”
He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the crash and closed his statement with a message of comfort.
“May the departed souls rest in peace.”
