Bulls to manage their ‘peak’
The Vodacom Bulls will struggle to shake off the favourites tag for this year’s Currie Cup title, despite the coaching staff saying they can’t get ahead of themselves.
The Bulls were rampant in their 64-0 demolition of the defending champion Sharks at Loftus in their round 2 clash on Saturday and now sit pretty at the top of the standings with a perfect 10 points from their two matches so far. The Pretoria outfit is just ahead of the Lions on the log due to a superior points difference.

But Bulls skills coach and former Cheetahs Currie Cup star Kennedy Tsimba says it’s way too early to be considered favourites and that some tough challenges still lie ahead.
“We’ve got to guard against complacency, it’s the biggest challenge right now. We’ve got to take it game by game and we’ll need to manage the expectation of thinking everything must just go our way because we’re playing well.”
Tsimba says looking back to last year, the Bulls also had a run of several unbeaten matches but still didn’t win the cup.
“The biggest thing is not to get ahead of ourselves. The lesson we’ve learnt from last year is that we have to perform at the right time. We need to be at our peak.”
Despite beating Western Province in Cape Town, and running circles around the defending champions, the Bulls feel Saturday’s clash against the Pumas at Loftus, will really push them.
“They’re an interesting team,” said Tsimba.
“They’ll bring a different challenge to us. They’ve incorporated quite a few of the players I used to coach at Tuks when we won the Varsity Cup. We’ve got to be able to answer every question they ask of us, and we’ve got to put our best foot forward. That’s the beauty of this Currie Cup – just when you think you’re on a high wave, you play a team that can knock you off.”
