Former Thulamela mayor appears in court over VBS Mutual Bank saga – SABC News
The corruption trial against a former Thulamela Municipality mayor accused in the VBS Mutual Bank saga will resume in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Polokwane, Limpopo, today.
Avhashoni Tshifhango faces corruption charges related to the R30 million that the municipality invested in the now-defunct bank.
The municipality withdrew its investment before the bank collapsed.
Tshifhango allegedly received a vehicle valued at more than half a million rand as a bribe after the municipality invested R30 million.
The only remaining state witness expected to take the stand is the former municipal manager of the municipality, Hlengani Maluleke.
Maluleke was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, that is wholly suspended for five years after he pleaded guilty about a year ago.
Meanwhile, some witnesses have testified anonymously. They repeated their evidence implicating some politicians in the looting of the bank.
