Parliament’s ad hoc committee, established to investigate allegations of threats to national security, has elected Molapi Lekganyane as its chairperson.

Parliament established the committee two weeks ago, following explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, that some of the most senior officials in the South African Police Service (SAPS) are involved in corruption and that Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, is associated with criminal syndicates.

Lekganyane is a member of the African National Congress (ANC), serving on the 11-member committee.

During his opening address at the committee meeting, Lekganyane said: “The surveys that have been done previously are losing confidence in public institutions. I think the last survey I was saying that the confidence in South Africans in Parliament is at 27%. It’s up to all of us to say, those confidence rates is that we represent or do they represent us as members of parliament ?…My feeling is that all of us here, we have been appointed from a position of incompetence and every day when we do our work, let’s find a way to do better so that we can improve from that incompetence.”
