Samwu to march for reinstatement of workers dismissed in 2021 – SABC News

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) will lead a march to Tshwane House today to demand the reinstatement of workers who were unfairly dismissed in 2021.

The dismissals followed a salary increase dispute which emanated from the City of Tshwane’s failure to adhere to an agreement it had reached with Samwu and other labour unions.

The agreement was that workers would receive salary increases of 3.5% in 2021 and 5.4% in 2023.

However, the Tshwane Metro tried to apply for an exemption at the bargaining council to avoid the increases, but the application was rejected.

Samwu Tshwane Regional Chairperson Lehlohonolo Maphatsoe says they hope that the new administration will reinstate the workers as soon as possible.

“We had entered into what we call political intervention after the new administration, which replaced the DA. We started this political intervention. We spoke to all the parties that are involved in the coalition, so we find each other in terms of the reinstatement, however, the discussion is still ongoing. But, our frustrations are that we are not finding each other in terms of when should they be reinstated. So, we are hoping that when we embark on this particular protected march, the administration will, therefore, consider reinstating these particular employees as soon as possible.”
