A man who was stabbed in the face shocked officers and community members when he staggered into the Mfuleni satellite police station early on Thursday morning, bleeding heavily.

According to witnesses, the man had been drinking at a nearby shebeen when the incident occurred.

He was stabbed in the chin, leading some onlookers to believe he was dead due to the amount of blood he was losing.

“He fell as he was walking towards the police station, and then he got up and continued,” said one community member.

“It was early in the morning when I saw him walk. I don’t know exactly where he came from, but shortly after he got inside the police station, it was closed and only reopened after the ambulance took him away.”

The motive and exact circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unclear at this time.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) deputy chairperson France Mashaba said the man appeared to be intoxicated when he entered the station.

“There was a lot of blood in the charge office. People thought he was dead. The wound, from what I’ve heard, was a small cut in the jaw,” Mashaba said.

“The rumour was that he was stabbed by a woman, but there’s no confirmed information about a suspect.”

Mashaba added that firefighters based nearby were called in to assist.

“He was treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital for further observation.”

Police have since confirmed they are investigating the matter.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said Mfuleni SAPS had opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) after a 37-year-old man arrived at the satellite station in Main Road at about 6am.

“The victim received medical assistance for a wound sustained on his chin. The circumstances form part of the investigation. No arrests have been made,” said Pojie.

Last year, a similarly shocking incident occurred at Nyanga police station, when a woman who had been shot while on her way to work was rushed there by the driver of the vehicle.

She was declared dead at the scene, and the police station had to be closed while the scene was active.
