Batho Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste and Haashim Pead say their time in camp with the Springboks has only strengthened their hunger to reach the highest level.

The Boks wrapped up their two-week conditioning camp in Joburg on Thursday, with the Junior Boks stars walking away from the experience inspired to push harder for future selection.

The talented trio were invited to train with the senior team during the buildup to the Rugby Championship, as part of Rassie Erasmus’ plans to build squad depth and develop young talent.

“It was fantastic to have Bathobele, Cheswill and Haashim with us, and it was impressive to see their enthusiasm and the way they grabbed the opportunity with both hands on and off the field,” said Erasmus.

“We were very pleased with the way they slotted into the training sessions and used the time to interact with the Springbok players and learn from them, even though we made it clear that there was no pressure on them to grasp all our structures and systems.”

Erasmus said the U20 players embraced the opportunity and showed real potential for the future.

“They all have bright futures, and we hope the experience they gained, and the lessons learned will set them in good stead, as they look to further develop their careers and strive to reach this level in the coming years.”

Jooste, who still played SA U18 rugby last year, said the past two weeks were “incredible”.

“As a Junior Bok, it was a privilege to be among the best, and although it was tough, I learned a lot. I walk away with new insights, more confidence and an even greater hunger to grow.”

Pead, one of the top try scorers at the World Rugby U20 Championship, said the Springbok environment motivated him to raise his game.

“Thanks to the coaches and players. I believe I have grown in the last two weeks … anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

Hlekani, who also featured for the Junior Boks in 2023, said: “The last two weeks have allowed me to improve the techniques I was lacking in … I’m going to keep pushing, stay hungry and hopefully one day I’ll be part of this squad.”

The Boks returned home on Thursday afternoon to spend time with their families, and will reassemble in Joburg on Sunday ahead of their opening Rugby Championship match against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on 16 August.
