KZNPO opens early spring season

The KZN Philharmonic is presenting a two-concert Early Spring Season featuring a joyous selection of music that includes old favourites and new horizons.

The opening concert on August 28 features Brandon Phillips, has resident conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on the podium with Japanese pianist Keigo Mukawa as soloist.

Mukawa won the third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2021, and the second prize at the Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition in 2019 and is currently performing in a wide range of solo and chamber music based in Japan and Europe. He has a reputation for performances that explore the stylistic beauty and diverse tone quality of each composer.

Pianist Kiego Mukawa will play Saint-Saëns’s final Piano Concerto No 5.

The programme opens with Mozart’s The Magic Flute Overture, followed by Saint-Saëns’s final Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Major, which was dubbed the Egyptian because of its exotic and quixotic melodies. Borodin’s Symphony No 1 in E-flat concludes the evening.

The second concert on September 4 sees popular charmer Daniel Boico conducting with Canadian violinist Susanne Hou. Hou studied at the Juliard School and has won three gold medals at international violin competitions. At the age of 17 she famously performed to acclaim all Paganini’s 24 caprices in Toronto and Aspen

The programme begins with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture, before Hou tackles

Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No 2 in D minor. This is the most popular of the Polish virtuoso violinists’ works which premiered in St Petersburg in 1862, with the composer playing the violin.

The programme closes with a favourite “sing-along”; Schubert’s Symphony No 9, or Great Symphony, in C Major.

Both programmes start at 7pm.
