Desperate search continues for Durban teenager missing at sea during school outing

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the search for a missing teenager in KwaZulu-Natal remains ongoing.

The 16-year-old boy went missing at Wedge Beach in Durban on Friday.

The NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the South African Police Service (SAPS) search and rescue, assisted by Metro Police Search and Rescue, are continuing in the ongoing search for the missing teenager.

“At 6.08pm, on Friday, August 8, NSRI Durban duty crew and the KZN Surf Rescue Network were activated following reports of a male teenager, believed to be on a local school outing, missing at Wedge Beach, Durban, suspected to have gone missing in the surf zone,” Lambinon said.

The police’s search and rescue teams, including Metro Police Search and Rescue, the South African Police Services (SAPS), and NSRI rescue swimmers, responded directly to the scene, while the NSRI Durban duty crew responded to the NSRI Durban station 5 rescue base and departed in the NSRI rescue vehicle, and the NSRI craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched.

“An extensive sea and shoreline search that continued into the night has revealed no signs of the missing teenager, who is believed to be aged 16. The circumstances surrounding the incident are not clear to NSRI.  Police are investigating. The search is ongoing. Thoughts, care, and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time,” Lambinon said.
