Guterres alarmed by Israel’s decision to take control of Gaza City – SABC News

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he’s gravely alarmed by a decision by the Government of Israel to take control of Gaza City, calling it a dangerous escalation that risks deepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians.

He warned that the move could endanger more lives, including the remaining hostages.

Israel’s Security Cabinet took a decision to expand military operations in the devastated enclave, by approving a military operation to take control of the city in central-northern Gaza, affecting hundreds of thousands seeking shelter there.

Guterres described Palestinians already enduring a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions and warned that this further escalation would result in additional forced displacement, killing and massive destruction, compounding the unimaginable suffering of the population.

The UN Chief reiterated his urgent appeal for a permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access across Gaza for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

He urged the Israeli Government to abide by its obligations under international law, appeals that have largely been ignored, including a 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice that Israel end its unlawful occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
