Gauteng Portfolio Committee strongly condemns recent killing of SAPS officers – SABC News
The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety says it views the recent killing of two police officers in Roodepoort, not only as an attack on the country’s law enforcement officers, but also a direct assault on the rule of law.
The committee’s chairperson, Dr Bandile Masuku has expressed outrage following the brutal incident.
The two detectives were reportedly shot and killed by suspect Jabulani Moyo, an awaiting trial prisoner, while being transported from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court to the Boksburg Correctional Facility, last Friday.
Masuku says police officers must also be allowed to use necessary force when their lives are in imminent danger.
“The committee calls on the South African Police service (SAPS) and all relevant law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in apprehending the suspect.
No one should be allowed to evade justice after committing such a despicable crime. The murder of police officers who are entrusted with the critical responsibility of protecting our citizens, must be met with the full might of the law.
The committee demands that the suspect be hunted down, arrested and made an example of to send a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated.
Furthermore, the committee calls on government to strengthen mechanisms that ensure the safety of police officers and create a conducive working environment for them.”
