South Africans can expect a week of shifting skies and icy breezes as a series of cold fronts sweep across the country. Monday starts with a chill, especially over the central and eastern parts, where cold to cool conditions will dominate.

Coastal KwaZulu-Natal may see up to 30% chance of rain, with cloudy skies and brisk winds pushing inland. The Northern Cape and Free State enjoy more sunshine, but the clear skies do little to ease the morning bite.

The Western Cape will be cool and mostly dry, with some cloud cover creeping in from the west and winds freshening along the coast.

By Tuesday, the cold front digs deeper into the interior, spreading cool to cold conditions across much of the country.

A 30% chance of rain is forecast for parts of the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo’s escarpment, with the high ground wrapped in low cloud. Warmer patches may briefly lift spirits along parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape’s far northwest, but they will be short-lived.

Wednesday brings the most widespread wet weather of the week, with rain probabilities climbing to 60% over the southern Drakensberg and 30% across large swathes of the Northern and Eastern Cape, as well as coastal KwaZulu-Natal.

Cold air settles firmly over the interior, making for a raw and blustery midweek, while warmer pockets along parts of Mpumalanga and the Lowveld offer the only real reprieve.
