Minister for Women, Youth and Persons with Disablities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says the country’s land restitution process continues to disadvantage women 30 years into democracy.

Chikunga was speaking at the P20 Women’s Parliament’ in Cape Town.

The two-day event is being hosted by Parliament.

Chikunga says her department is planning to join forces with other relevant departments to achieve gender parity in land distribution.

“Land tenure systems continue to privilege men while women’s access to productive assets, land credit and technology is curtailed by both patriarchal norms and state policies that disregard gender,” she says.

Chikunga says the reality is that for far too long violence against women and girls has remained pervasive.
