GBV spotlighted at National Convention with symbolic coffin display – SABC News

The harsh reality of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has taken centre stage at the National Convention, which started at UNISA in Pretoria on Friday.

Women for Change South Africa made a bold statement when they unveiled a symbolic coffin adorned with the faces of women from all walks of life who are victims of abuse.

They include Uyinene Mrwetyana, Hillary Gardy and Chesnay Keppler.

Their images serve as a haunting reminder of the urgent need to confront violent crime.

Women for Change representative Sabrina Walter says the frequency with which perpetrators are granted bail is alarming.

“Why are we giving bail to perpetrators all the time? It started with Olerato. I think this case absolutely hit the nation. Seeing we are women for change, when Olerato was murdered, we were helping the friends looking for her. We found out, and the perpetrators’ pictures were released, and more than 10 women came forward, two women for change saying, ‘I know this guy. I was abused. I was beaten, and I’m just glad I’m alive.’ Why are those people out of jail? It’s shocking.”
