Floyd Shivambu to introduce new political party Mayibuye at meeting with King Misuzulu

Floyd Shivambu will visit King Misuzulu kaZwelithini in Nongoma, north of KwaZulu-Natal to introduce his newly-formed party Mayibuye on Monday.

The former Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Secretary-General announced the visit during his final leg of his consultative forum in Durban on Sunday.

Shivambu said eight provinces had given him the go ahead to form a political movement which included a political party that will contest elections, starting with the local government next year. He said the political movement will consist of civil society organisation, civic organisation and workers’ union, amongst others.

“Tomorrow I will travel to Nongoma to meet His Majesty, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini to inform him about what you have said you want to happen. In all eight provinces where we have held our consultations, they all said they wanted us not just as a political party alone, but a political movement which incorporates civic and civil bodies among other formations. With the political party, people want us to contest local government elections next year and beyond,” said Shivambu.

Most of the people who spoke at the meeting agreed that he must form a political home for them because they have not seen changes from the previous parties they voted for. Among the attendees were two traditional leaders from the province and Mpumalanga.

After he was expelled as the MKP Secretary-General in June, Shivambu immediately announced that he would start consultation asking people whether there was a need for a new political party in the South African political landscape . He was eventually expelled from the party last month.

The MKP cited an unsanctioned visit to controversial Malawian fugitive Prophet Shepherd Bushiri who fled South Africa in 2020.
