Zuma’s legacy lecture to go ahead, MKP vows to defend his presidency years
MK Party said the inaugural lecture, aimed at challenging the narrative that former president Jacob Zuma’s tenure was marked by “wasted years”, will continue despite the party’s current situation.
Initially set for 12 April and later postponed to 26 June, the lecture has experienced several delays, reflecting the instability affecting the party.
MKP spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, told IOL that despite the delay, the lecture will be restructured and will be conducted with a new format.
“There have been some delays, but it will go on. The party has been restructuring, and we will give it a different approach,” Ndhlela confirmed.
This was introduced by the former secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, who has since been expelled from the party. Shivambu stated that the public lecture on Zuma is important because the party is obligated to challenge the public narrative that Zuma’s political career and contributions are wasted years.
“Our President remains the most important asset in the life of the organisation, and we carry the revolutionary obligation to defend his politics, ideas and vision,” he said then.
Shivambu is now the national convener of Mayibuye Consultation.
During his presidency, Zuma encountered multiple votes of no confidence and even faced an impeachment motion in Parliament due to his alleged involvement in corruption with the Gupta family and state capture.
However, he managed to withstand all these challenges, largely due to the protection afforded by the ANC’s parliamentary majority.
The MK Party, formed as a breakaway from the ANC, now finds itself at a crossroads.
According to the party, the upcoming lecture is more than a historical defense of Zuma—it’s a litmus test for the party’s ability to regroup, redefine its identity, and survive its own internal fractures.
Whether it becomes a moment of renewal or further discord remains to be seen.
