Gift of the Givers and SAPS unite to combat gender-based violence in the Garden Route

In celebration of Women’s Month, humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, has partnered with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to launch a gender-based violence (GBV) campaign.

The organisation has partnered with the SAPS Eden Cluster District, and the campaign is set to support women across the Garden Route in the Western Cape.

Gift of the Givers spokesperson, Ali Sablay, said that with GBV cases rising at an alarming rate and many women still afraid to report abuse, this initiative aims to break the silence and provide tangible support to affected communities.

“The campaign officially kicked off on Monday (August 18) across five SAPS stations and will expand in the coming days to include: Ladysmith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, Uniondale, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, Riversdale, and Heidelberg,” he said.

As part of the campaign, over 2,500 dignity packs will be distributed to women in need, sanitary towels will be delivered to 41 schools across the district, and community-based awareness programs will be conducted to educate and empower.

On Tuesday, an all-women’s team roadblock took place where female SAPS officers and volunteers engaged with female motorists and distributed small gifts as tokens of appreciation and solidarity.

“This campaign symbolises hope, safety, and solidarity — painting the Garden Route green, blue, and pink in support of women everywhere,” Sablay said.
