Social Sciences dominates at Eskom Expo Eden Karoo Regional Science Fair
Social Sciences, Engineering, and Environmental Studies stood out at the Eskom Expo Eden Karoo Regional Science Fair, held at the George Civic Centre on 16 August. The fair featured 49 projects by 74 learners from Grades 4–12 and TVET students.
The most popular category was Social Sciences with 17 entries, followed by Engineering with 16 and Environmental Studies with eight.
Eskom Expo’s Western Cape Provincial Coordinator, Lyndon Manas, said: “The Eden Karoo Regional Committee extends its heartfelt congratulations to all finalists who participated in the regional science fair (RSF). Learners displayed months of dedication through innovative projects that demonstrated their passion for science and problem-solving.”
During the awards ceremony, 12 Gold, five Silver, and 16 Bronze medals were awarded. Special Awards from Eskom went to:
Best Female: Izelke Conradie & Sarai Roos (Grade 10, Punt High)
Best Innovation: Heinrich Conradie (Grade 11, Outeniqua High)
Best Energy Project: Joël Oosthuizen & Jonathan Van Wyk (Grade 11, Punt High)
Best Development Project: Linathi Koyana (Grade 9, Murray High)
Ms Mologadi Motshele, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, said: “One of the most powerful aspects of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is its deliberate focus on inclusion and transformation… This not only builds equity within the education system but also creates a more diverse and representative pool of future scientists and engineers.”
Other sponsors, including Steyn-Wilson Laboratories, Zebra Surfacing, and Martin & East Group, recognised learners across categories such as Agriculture, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Energy, Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Social Sciences.
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “It not only offers a unique platform for talented young scientists to showcase their groundbreaking innovations but also opens doors to exciting career pathways… Congratulations to all the deserving medal winners!
