Two men in court for demanding R1. 1 million ransom after kidnapping a 73-year-old woman

Two suspects appeared in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where they face charges of kidnapping and extortion.

Ayabulela Busakwe, 31, and Andile Mathumbu, 29, are accused of kidnapping a 73-year-old who was abducted on August 11, 2025, by two men who blocked her path using a Volkswagen Polo in Crocus Street, Kariega.

After her kidnapping, a ransom demand was made, prompting an urgent investigation led by the Hawks.

She was finally released on August 16 and was found unharmed close to the Kariega police station and reunited with her family the same day.

Following her release, Busakwe and Mathumbu were arrested in various locations in Gqeberha.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said both men are intending to apply for bail and the State plans to oppose it.

“Neither of them has previous convictions or pending cases,” said Tyali

Tyali said the matter has been remanded to August 27 for a formal bail application.

“Investigations are ongoing. The NPA has commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the victim’s safe recovery and the swift arrest of the suspects,” added Tyali.

According to Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, at the time of the suspects’ arrest, police recovered a huge undisclosed amount of cash, two vehicles and two firearms that were suspected to have been used in the kidnapping and were seized for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the matter has been remanded to August 27 for a formal bail application.
