ANC Ekurhuleni's new leadership faces backlash over gender representation
The African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni has come under fire following its announcement of its newly elected Regional Executive Committee, which includes only one woman among the top five leadership positions.
The composition has raised concerns over gender representation, particularly in light of the ANC’s long-standing commitment to gender equality and its 50/50 policy.
The newly elected officials are Nkosindiphile Xhakaza as Regional Chairperson, Jongizizwe Xhakaza as Regional Secretary, Jean Seitlaho as Regional Deputy Chairperson, Moipone Mhlongo as Regional Deputy Secretary, and Irvin Mohlala as Regional Treasurer.
In response to public concerns, ANC Ekurhuleni spokesperson Mzi Khumalo stated that the election process was democratic and complied fully with the party’s constitution. He said the ANC does not prescribe a specific number of women for the top five positions and that candidates were elected by voting delegates based on majority support.
Khumalo said the outcome should not be interpreted as a failure of policy, but rather as a result of a transparent and open democratic process. He noted that the ANC constitution does not enforce a quota for women within the regional top five and that any candidate, regardless of gender, has the right to be nominated and elected.
Khumalo also said that the ANC has structures in place, such as the Women’s League and Youth League, to prepare and empower members for leadership. He explained that the ANC Women’s League is specifically designed to develop and support women leaders, and that broader party structures remain inclusive of all groups, including women and LGBTQ+ members.
Referencing Statistics South Africa’s Gender Series Volume VI: Women Empowerment (2014–2024), which outlines ongoing systemic challenges faced by women in leadership and employment, Khumalo said criticism often follows when preferred candidates do not succeed, but this should not be used to undermine democratic outcomes.
Khumalo concluded by saying the ANC remains committed to inclusivity, policy-based leadership, and ongoing efforts to advance gender equality through structured development and leadership support.
