Cape Flats CPF calls for urgent intervention after shooting of a baby – SABC News

The Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum is calling for urgent intervention from the police following the fatal shooting of a three-month-old baby in Bonteheuwel on the Cape Flats on Friday morning.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swaartbooi says two armed men suspected to be gang members entered a house and proceeded to one of the living rooms. One of the men opened fire, leaving the infant with serious injuries.

“The child was rushed to hospital for medical treatment, but was later declared dead by medical personnel. No arrests have been made.”

Forum Chairperson Graham Lindhorst says gang violence in Bishop Lavis and surrounding areas is out of control and requires urgent national attention.

“It’s not only the Bontehuewel area that’s affected by ongoing shootings and murders; the Kalksteenfontein area, as well as the Valhalla Park area, and occasionally in the Bishop Lavis or the Sector 3 area, are faced with the same terror.”

“We again say that SAPS must up their game. I think the problem with SAPS is they don’t even understand what is the gang issue or the gang dynamics in that area. I doubt that they even have the expertise to deal with these gangs in those areas, notwithstanding that they don’t even have the resources,” adds Lindhorst.
