KZN authorities trace company of truck driver in fatal N3 crash – SABC News


KwaZulu-Natal authorities say they have traced the company that the truck driver, believed to be responsible for the crash on the Bergville Interchange on N3, worked for.

Four people died and several others were critically wounded when a truck rammed into a stationary minibus taxi that was parked in the emergency lane.

It is reported that the driver, who is from Swaziland, vanished from the scene.

Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Sindi Msimang says police are investigating the case of culpable homicide.

“The driver is still missing; he fled the scene after causing the accident yesterday. We managed to get hold of a company that had employed him, and they have confirmed that the driver is from Swaziland, and he is not answering their calls either. A case of culpable homicide has been opened in Ladysmith, South African Police Service (SAPS),” says Msimanga.

Spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlement, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, has confirmed that all the deceased are from the Eastern Cape.

Sibiya says the employer of the now missing truck driver has to account. “The MEC has confirmed that there is an investigation that has been launched to ascertain to what could have been the cause of the accident. They were all travelling from the Eastern Cape, going to Gauteng. It is the accident that is the subject of the investigation, but the uppermost MEC has also appealed to the people of KwaZulu-Natal to work with the police as we are searching for the driver of the truck who has disappeared,” says Sibiya.

He says the MEC has also pointed out that the owner of the trucking company must be held accountable.
