Nandi Nyembe gave dignity to the stories of South Africans: Chiloane – SABC News

Tributes continue to pour in for the late legendary actor Nandi Nyembe, who passed away on Saturday. “Mam Nandi” as she is affectionately known, died after being wheelchair-bound due to her deteriorating health condition.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, has joined the arts industry and South Africans in extending his condolences.

Chiloane says that with a career spanning over five decades, Nyembe enriched South Africa’s cultural heritage through iconic roles in television productions.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Mme Nandi. She gave dignity to the stories of our people and carried them with authenticity and grace. Earlier this year, she spoke with rare honesty about her wish to keep working rather than being pitied.”

Department of Sports, Arts and Culture spokesperson Zimasa Velaphi says Nyembe left a legacy that will live on and inspire generations.

“Mam Nandi was far more than an actress. She was the very soul of South African storytelling, a teacher, guide and a mother to this nation. She carried our struggles, laughter and victories through every performance with truth, dignity and heart. Through her life’s work, she gave our people pride and our story’s purpose. Her journey broke barriers.”
