Northern Cape municipalities get R354m Eskom debt relief – SABC News

The Northern Cape Provincial Treasury has committed to supporting municipalities in the province that are still on the Eskom Municipal Debt Relief Programme.

Four municipalities qualified for the first Eskom debt relief write-off.

Following the intervention of the National Treasury, Eskom has agreed to implement a one third debt write-off of over R353m owed by municipalities.

The debt write-off will take effect in the first week of September.

“Northern Cape Provincial Treasury proudly congratulates Sol Plaatje, Umsobomvu, Ubuntu, and Siyancuma municipalities for qualifying for the first Eskom debt relief right off,” says Provincial Treasury spokesperson, Kgalalelo Matsime.

Kgalalelo says together, these municipalities have reduced their Eskom debt by over R354m after meeting the strict conditions of the programme.

“This milestone demonstrates their commitment to sound financial management and improving the municipal viability,” he adds.
