Curro Delft wins the 2025 Climate Change School Debate Competition
In an inspiring showcase of talent and innovation, Curro Delft emerged as the overall winners of the 2025 Climate Change School Debate Competition, a prestigious event that emphasised the role of youth in combating climate change. Hosted by the Working on Fire–Kishugu Joint Venture and proudly sponsored by a retailer’s MyDifference programme, the competition was held on Friday, 22 August, at the Green Point Smart Living Centre.
Themed “Empowering Youth as Agents of Change in Disaster Risk Reduction”, the event brought together six dynamic teams, each composed of five learners, who passionately debated critical topics including renewable energy, conservation efforts, wildfire management, and global climate policy. Their presentations were not only rich in scientific evidence but also filled with bold ideas and fresh perspectives, capturing the attention of both judges and audience members alike.
“Congratulations to all the learners, and especially to Curro Delft who took top honours,” said Mbuso Mlambo, a representative from MyDifference Programme.
“We are committed to supporting initiatives that empower young people to think critically and act boldly on climate issues. These learners are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are making a difference today.”
The debate competition also featured a panel of distinguished adjudicators from key organisations including the Western Cape Education Department, CapeNature, SANParks, and the City of Cape Town, lending expert insight and credibility to the proceedings. Their presence underscored the significance of the event as not merely a contest, but a vital platform for awakening the voices of tomorrow’s leaders.
Working on Fire–Kishugu JV, the event’s organiser, believes in a powerful message: when provided with opportunities, young people possess the courage, insight, and determination needed to shape the future of our planet.
“By empowering youth through platforms such as this, we help nurture informed citizens who are ready to adapt to a changing climate and reduce disaster risks,” the organisation said in a statement.
