SANDF defends chief against defiance allegations towards Defence Minister
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has taken a firm stand against recent allegations suggesting insubordination from its Chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya, towards Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga.
In an official statement, the SANDF expressed deep concern over what it described as “incorrect” and “misleading” claims that General Maphwanya is defying ministerial authority.
The military organisation underscored that the reports in circulation misrepresent the facts surrounding the ongoing discussions between General Maphwanya and Minister Motshekga.
It is not customary for the SANDF to engage in public discussions regarding the administrative matters of its members, nor to divulge details surrounding the recommendations of the Ombudsman or ministerial decisions.
“The insinuation that the Chief of the SANDF is ‘defying’ or ‘giving the middle finger’ to the Minister is baseless and irresponsible.
“The leadership of the defence force reaffirmed General Maphwanya’s commitment to the constitutional authority of the Minister, highlighting that he is addressing the matter with the utmost respect and diligence,” the SANDF said.
It added that in line with established military protocol and the principles of good governance, General Maphwanya is currently consulting both with the Minister and the Ombudsman regarding the situation. These discussions are aimed at ensuring transparency and adherence to legal frameworks.
The SANDF assured the public and stakeholders alike that it is dedicated to upholding due process. The military leadership is committed to ensuring that any final resolution regarding the matter will be made strictly in accordance with the law, military procedures, and the mandates of the Executive Authority.
