The Western Cape Education Department has raised concerns following the recent taxi-related shootings. At least six people have been killed in Philippi East, Khayelitsha and Macassar in the past two days.

Provincial Minister David Maynier says the violence has sparked concern among parents and on social media.

He says schools will remain open where possible but closures are decided on a case-by-case basis with district officials if safety is at risk.

Maynier has also urged parents to rely only on official communication from their children’s schools.

“It’s extremely disappointing that, once again the violent behaviour of the taxi organisations affects the ability of our learners to access their right to basic education. The best interests of our children should always come first. The department will continue to monitor the situation in the area closely, with the support and the guidance of SAPS,” says Maynier.
