Matjhabeng aims to be first municipality to generate own power – SABC News
Matjhabeng Municipality in the Free State aims to be the first local municipality in the country to obtain a licence to generate its own electricity.
The municipality, together with the Electricity and Energy Department, will establish an energy technical working group aimed at strengthening its electricity infrastructure and capacity.
Matjhabeng Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha says they are gearing up for their investment summit in October.
Khalipha says through the summit, the municipality wants to attract investors for its energy hub.
He says, “”The City of eThekwini already has their license, we will be visiting them, we want to be the first (local) municipality in the country to get that license for the interest of our people because we want our people to benefit, construction will be done by Matjhabeng, not private people, we will empower our people.”
