Rand Water cuts Merafong Municipality water supply amid R1 bln debt – SABC News
Rand Water has announced it will cut bulk potable water supply to the Merafong Municipality by 20% after the municipality failed to settle its R1 billion debt.
The utility says negotiations between the two parties have collapsed, with Merafong unable to honor its financial obligations.
Rand Water Spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says the reduction is necessary to curb further debt accumulation.
“The decision to implement this stringent credit control measure ensures compliance with the provision of from the Promotion of Administrative Act. This act is necessary to hold municipalities accountable and to prevent further escalation of water services debts. Rand Water remains committed to serving its customers and ensuring long-term security of portable water supply. All its customers with the corresponding duty to pay for the services,” says Maroo.
