Cash takes over Lions

Ivan van Rooyen has replaced Lions Currie Cup head coach Mzwakhe Nkosi for the rest of the campaign.

According to Rugby365, Van Rooyen – the Lions director of coaching – will take charge of the side for Saturday’s match against the Voadcom Bulls at Ellis Park.

This follows last weekend’s 47-31 defeat to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, where the Lions produced a poor first-half display before rallying in the second.

Nkosi was highly critical afterwards, admitting his team had been “terrible” in the opening 40 minutes. He also reportedly used colourful language in the change room, where various players were told they will never play for him again.

Nkosi was informed this week that Van Rooyen would assume responsibility for the Currie Cup side and asked to assist but has instead returned to his role with the junior teams.

The Lions are fourth on the Currie Cup log having beaten the Sharks, Pumas and WP, while losing to the table-topping Cheetahs and second-placed Boland.
