KZN Transport Dept to meet taxi associations and e-hailing drivers – SABC News

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department will meet with representatives of taxi associations and e-hailing drivers on Friday in a bid to address the violence between the two groups.

Fifteen taxi drivers and owners have been taken in for questioning after one e-hailing service driver was assaulted and another was shot at in KwaDabeka.

A lack of regulation of the e-hailing industry has been cited as the reason for the recent attacks on the drivers.

The department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, “If you look at the amendments that have been introduced, we are now going to be having the e-hailing drivers having the operating cards. We are now going to be having the entire e-hailing sector operating independently.”

“They are no longer going to be regarded as digital companies. They are now going to be regarded as transport companies. So, we are very hopeful that in the next few weeks, the next few months, we are going to see the implementation of the regulations.”
