Santaco, City of Ekurhuleni reach agreement to end taxi strike – SABC News

The Gauteng MEC for Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, says a settlement has been reached with the taxi industry in the City of Ekurhuleni bringing the two days strike to an end.

Commuters in Katlehong, Tembisa, Germiston, and surrounding areas were left stranded from yesterday, due to a taxi strike organized by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).

The strike was a response to the Department of Transport’s officials impounding of 17 taxis for various offenses.

Briefing the media in Pretoria, Diale-Tlabela says the taxi industry has agreed to resume services this afternoon.

“What is important to us is to apologise to those who have been inconvenienced by lack of services since yesterday and this morning. And we are happy that we have reached a settlement with the taxi industry in Ekurhuleni that they will resume services this afternoon and make sure that they provide the service.”

“And importantly to us is to deal [with] the issues that they have raised and amongst those issues is issues of how do we make sure that there is law and order within public transport operations in our province,” explains Diale-Tlabela.
