Taxi operations shutdown to affect Ekurhuleni: Santaco – SABC News
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in Gauteng says taxi operations will only be shut down in parts of Ekurhuleni.
This follows threats of a shutdown in the province on Thursday after officials from the Transport Department impounded 17 taxis for offences, including unroadworthy vehicles.
Taxi operations in Benoni, Katlehong and Kempton Park were disrupted, leaving many commuters stranded.
Santaco Provincial Secretary Graham Fritz says the resumption of operations in Ekurhuleni will be communicated after a decision is made.
Fritz says, “Commuters across the province can continue to rely on normal taxi operations. Regarding Ekurhuleni, the provincial and national leadership of the council is actively engaged in constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the outstanding matters.”
He says, “We are also in ongoing dialogue with both the Gauteng Provincial Government and the National Transport Ministry to ensure these issues are resolved speedily and amicably. We remain committed to finding a sustainable solution through negotiation. An update on taxi services in the Ekurhuleni region will be communicated as soon as a decision has been reached.”
