Families denounce slow pace in Koffiefontein police murder probe – SABC News
The Hawks in the Free State say the killing of two police constables inside the Koffiefontein police station in June 2017 is still under investigation.
This comes after families and residents raised concerns that the investigations were slow. Family members say for eight years they have been struggling to find closure.
Residents of the mining town have called on the police top brass to intervene.
Hawks provincial warrant officer, Fikiswa Matoti says no one has been positively linked to the murders. “We can confirm the case relating to the murder of police officials in Koffiefontein is under investigation by the Hawks. A provincial task team was established to join resources and work on the case. Thus far, no one has been positively linked to the murders. We would like to assure the public that all efforts are being taken to follow possible leads. Where there is substantial evidence linking anyone to the murder, such suspects will be secured before the court.”
One of the residents, Laurenthy Kabi suspects foul play. “At that time, the radios at the police station were not working. Constables Manjo and Mekoa were in the police station, and the van was doing the rounds. One would more or less expect because the radios are not functioning, they would have come to the police station several times to ask if there are any cases reported. Instead, what they did when they arrived that morning was to stand outside for hours with the van without going in. Isn’t it common sense that one would go in and ask if there were any cases reported? Those are all our frustrations.”
