First-year University of Venda student allegedly stabbed to death by boyfriend in Ngovhela

A 20-year-old first-year Bachelor of Arts in Language Practice student at the University of Venda (UNIVEN) was fatally stabbed multiple times, allegedly by her boyfriend – a fellow 20-year-old second year student enrolled in Environmental Sciences.

The university confirmed that the incident occurred inside the perpetrator’s room at an accredited off-campus student residence in Ngovhela around 4 pm.

University spokesperson Dr Takalani Dzaga said, according to preliminary reports, the two entered the residence in seemingly high spirits before chaos erupted moments later.

“Shortly thereafter, loud noises and signs of distress were heard from the room,” Dr Dzaga said.

He said security personnel responded swiftly, forcibly entering the locked room where they discovered the female student fatally wounded.

Dzaga said in a twisted turn of events, the perpetrator attempted to take his own life by jumping through a second-floor window, sustaining injuries in the process.

Limpopo police confirmed that he is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital under police guard.

“Two knives were found at the scene,” Dzaga added.

He said representatives from the university management have visited the family of the deceased, who hailed from Tshitomboni (Makovha) village outside Thohoyandou, to extend condolences and offer support during this harrowing time.

Professor Bernard Nthambeleni, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UNIVEN, expressed profound sorrow over the untimely death.

“The entire university community is reeling from this tragic loss. I am deeply devastated by the untimely and violent death of our student. On behalf of the University of Venda, I extend heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and fellow students,” he said.

He condemned the “senseless act of violence” and reiterated the university’s commitment to combatting gender-based violence in all its forms.

The timing of this tragedy coincides with the closing of Women’s Month – a period meant to celebrate the resilience and strength of women.

Nthambeleni emphasised the university’s dedication to strengthening measures that ensure the safety and well-being of all students

“Support services, including trauma counselling, are being made available to affected students and staff,” he added.

Meanwhile, Limpopo police confirmed that the male suspect has been charged with the murder of his fellow student.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba noted the suspect’s attempts to evade arrest, jumping through the window from the third floor, and he sustained some injuries .

“The suspect is now at the medical facility receiving treatment under police guard,” Ledwaba said.

He said the suspect is expected to appear before Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 1, 2025.
