Head-on collision in Limpopo claims five lives on Ysterberg Mountain

Five people have died and two others were injured in a devastating crash early on Saturday at Ysterberg Mountain, within Polokwane Municipality, Capricorn District.

The victims were burned beyond recognition as the vehicles caught fire.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the accident occurred when two sedans collided head-on.

Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said that four of the deceased were burned beyond recognition, while the two injured – a driver and a passenger – were taken to a nearby hospital.

“Preliminary reports indicate that one of the vehicles attempted to overtake,” Chuene said.

“Although the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating, recklessness cannot be ruled out.”

Meanwhile, Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Susani Violet Mathye, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Our hearts go out to the families and next of kin of those who lost their loved ones, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Mathye said.

Mathye also urged road users to exercise patience.

“As the political head, I am deeply concerned about these accidents, which seem to stem from recklessness,” she added.

She said the department was particularly worried about the recent surge in accidents along the Ysterberg Mountain route, mainly due to poor visibility during the early and late hours of the day.

“We will do everything possible to curb such crashes,” she said.
