White House to appeal court ruling that Trump’s tariffs were illegal – SABC News

The White House has signalled its intent to appeal Friday’s ruling of the Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit in Washington.

The court found that most of President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs were illegal.

He has imposed tariffs on imports from many countries including South Africa.

So, for now the tariffs remain in effect as the global country teams furiously try to negotiate bilateral trade deals that remain stuck in the trade-offs.

The US Court of International Trade first ruled in May that the President had exceeded his powers under the IEPA and the Federal Appeals court agrees, creating additional uncertainty for a central economic policy tool for the President.

The decision does not affect tariffs issued under other legal authority including those targeting the imports of steel and aluminum into the United States.

The IEPA gives the President the power to address “unusual and extraordinary” threats during national emergencies.

The Court ruled that it seemed unlikely Congress intended the President to have unlimited authority to impose tariffs.
