DA demands thorough probe into Lilian Ngoyi Street upgrades – SABC News

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has criticised Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero over the Lilian Ngoyi Street upgrade, saying it has missed deadlines and incurred budget overruns.

This is after City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero announced that the street would be reopened next week.

The road had collapsed nearly two years ago due to a methane gas explosion, resulting in its closure.

The DA says just 22% of the work is complete, with over R22 million spent out of the initial R70 million contract.

DA Joburg Caucus Leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says they are demanding a full probe into the road construction project.

“Morero is allergic to deadlines but a pro at shifting things as it suits his poor planning. It is for this reason that the DA has written to the National Treasury to request a full investigation into all contracts related to the Lilian Ngoyi Street project. We want clarity on whether the executive mayor and senior officials are personally benefiting from these inflated budgets.”
