Lilian Ngoyi Street to officially reopen next week – SABC News
The City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says Lillian Ngoyi Street, formerly known as Bree, in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD), will be reopened next week Friday.
The Mayor had previously committed to completing the repair work in August, which had been delayed due to the original contractor’s failure to meet deadlines.
This led to the termination of the contract and additional costs for the city.
The road collapsed nearly two years ago due to a methane gas explosion, resulting in its closure.

Despite the street not yet being operational and work still ongoing, Morero maintains that the project is not behind schedule.
Morero says the road project is complete and is ready for cars are ready to move up and down.
“It’s just finalising the sidewalks. Once you have done that, that’s why I say by the 12th, it will be fully used by motorists and pedestrians alike. So, it should be proper. So, it’s not a delay now. We wanted to launch it on the first to say, we’ve completed the work. It’s just to be done on the 12th,” says Morero.
