Former Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha resigns as ANC provincial chairperson, citing ethical concerns
Former Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha has tendered his immediate resignation as the ANC provincial chairperson in Limpopo, citing concerns about misconduct and a departure from the party’s core values.
In a letter dated September 1 – seen by IOL – Mathabatha addressed his resignation to ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula.
He cited widespread unethical conduct and a breakdown in organisational integrity, particularly in relation to the recent regional conferences in Vhembe and Waterberg, as key reasons for his decision.
The two regions, Waterberg and Vhembe, have recently elected new leadership through conference.
Mathabatha steps away from a leadership position he has held for years, signalling what could be deeper internal challenges within the ANC’s provincial structures.
“This decision is motivated by the concerning misconduct and lack of ANC values that I have observed within the organisation in this province, particularly in relation to the processes towards and conduct within the conferences of the Vhembe and Waterberg regions,” he said.
Mathabatha stated that he could not stand aloof to such unethical and “un-ANC” tendencies occurring under my leadership.
“I always stand available to deliberate these issues further with the National Office Bearers of the ANC at their convenience and make myself available for any interviews. Until then, I will step aside to allow the organisation to function without my involvement,” he said.
His resignation comes as the ANC in Limpopo faces serious challenges ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Polokwane Mayor John Mpe is under increasing public and political scrutiny amid allegations of irregular tender awards and claims of extending political and economic favours to foreign nationals.
The accusations have sparked public concern and reignited debate around ethical governance within the ruling party.
Currently, Mayor Mpe remains in office and has not been formally charged with wrongdoing.
