KwaZulu-Natal Premier and Public Protector unite against corruption and maladministration
The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thamsanqa Ntuli, recently met with Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka.
The meeting aimed to focus on strengthening cooperation between the Province and the Office of the Public Protector through joint initiatives aimed at enhancing accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.
This engagement emphasised the importance of collaboration between the government and the Chapter 9 institutions in addressing challenges of corruption, maladministration, and service delivery inefficiencies.
Speaking on the engagement, the premier said that as the 7th Administration, they are fully aware of the serious allegations of corruption, maladministration, and poor accountability that have impacted both provincial and local government over the year
“While many of these matters are linked to previous administrations, we are committed to confronting them decisively. Where we face capacity or legislative limitations, we will strengthen intergovernmental collaboration and draw on the constitutional mandate of Chapter 9 institutions,” said Ntuli.
Both parties noted the progress made in implementing the remedial actions issued by the Public Protector and reaffirmed their commitment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions. They also acknowledged the persistent challenges that continue to affect service delivery, including budgetary constraints.
“This partnership with the Public Protector strengthens our capacity to confront maladministration while ensuring service delivery challenges are tackled head-on,” said Ntuli.
Premier Ntuli also said that their administration is determined to work hand-in-hand with all oversight institutions to restore trust and protect communities.
