South Africans want to be rescued from current government: Shivambu – SABC News

Afrika Mayibuye Movement President Floyd Shivambu says the party’s decision to contest all wards in next year’s local government elections, comes from the people on the ground.

Shivambu made the comments during a press briefing in Midrand, Johannesburg where he officially unveiled Afrika Mayibuye Movement as a political party.

He says nationwide consultations with various communities across the country have revealed that the people of South Africa want to be rescued from the current government.

“So, the people of South Africa from all provinces have said we should constitute the movement to come and rescue them from the incompetence – from the mediocrity of governments of dysfunctional municipalities that they have been subjected to for many years. So, the demand is coming from the ground. We are not imposing ourselves; we are responding to the demand of the people of the ground.”

The party will contest all wards in the upcoming 2026 local government elections.

Shivambu says it has now been registered as a political party in terms of the Electoral Commission Act of 1996.

“We have a certificate that acknowledges us a political party. What that means is that Afrika Mayibuye Movement is going to be able to contest by-elections strategically. We are going to be able to contest all the wards in the 2026 local government elections. We are going to contest to win all the municipalities in 2026.”
